Hi-Hium Lake

DIARY

LIST

This page will be the location of information pertaining to the Hi-Hium trip of 2005. the dates of this trip will be from Thursday May 26, 2005 thru Thursday June 2, 2005 inclusive. We will have the exclusive use of Eagle Bay 2 once again if we have enough members in attendance. We are not trying to alarm the members, but from a business standpoint Ron and Missy may need the cabin for a larger party if our attendance is less than last year. In the event that would happen we could be redirected to a smaller cabin. We would still be able to spend the eight days on Hi-Hium Lake. I do believe that Ron and Missy would make every effort to keep the American Angler's Club in Eagle Bay 2 even if we are a bit weak in attendance.

Last years trip budget of $550 (US) was pretty accurate. We will use the same budget in 2005 and include the cost of a satelite capable cell phone rental with air time included. Greg was kind enough to cover this cost during the trip of 2004 and it was a handy tool to keep in touch with the families of those who were on the trip. It also linked us to a 911 emergency network in the event of a major medical emergency. This was such a success for the benifit of all the members it must be shared by the group. During the 2004 trip we had a very good plan for the meals without much time spent in the kitchen preparing the meals. We will follow last years plan and keep the modifications to a minimum. A few minor adjustments will be made to keep the menue fresh.

We will bring a few more gallons of boat fuel this year as we ran a bit tight during 2004. The fuel can was a bit on the low side at the end of the 2004 trip. This had the potential to limit the fishing options had we not been able to drift the weedbeds so effectivly.

We also noted the need for a small bottle of spirits whose seal is not to be broken until the last evening of our trip. A small bottle of Crown Royal would suffice for a toast to another years adventure.

I am starting the process of transposing the daily trip notes of 2004 to a web page. This account of the 2004 trip is a real kick and will bring back the glow that you experienced during this great trip. Also within this page you will be able to access the notes and nonsense that was published on the Old Web Site. Grab a brew and sit down and read about some of the fun times of our previous trips. It might be possible to recreat the letters that you received prior to the web site developemnet. I'm still working on that concept. Hugh had the wisdom to keep all his letters and was kind enough to loan them all to me about five years ago to be included in our web page. You might have noticed that nothing has happend with these yet but with the motivition and exceitement of launching a new web site, who knows?

With the success we experienced last year this year should be even better. The knowledge we gained will not be forgotten, it will just lead us to the next level of skill. We really have just begun to unravel the secrets of Hi-Hium lake. We now have a place to start on the weedbeds for this years experience. This year we will continue to explore this fertile water. It was quite evident that during the early spring there is quite a bit of insect and nymph activity over and in these beds. The best part was it was so relaxing to just drift along and be quite effective with very little effort at navigational skills. The simple indicator rig that we used with small bead head nymph and scud patterns put the flies right at the depth of the feeding Kamloops trout. So easy to fish, position the Kimori at the upwind side of the weedbed and strip off about 30 feet of flyline. Let the Kimori drift its own course and wait to see your orange indicator to dart under the surface of the water. A slight lift of the rod tip and another hook up! This method might be an effective approach to many other areas of Hi-Hium lake. The beauty of this type of fishing is that once you have found the feeding zone relative to the depth is that it can be repeated over and over. As the fish move up or down in the water colum you can just lengthen or shorten your tippet section to keep in touch with the Kamloops trout. Even as good as this experience was, we do feel that we havent broken the large fish code as of yet. Yes we have landed some large spawners but we have yet to land the 24+" Kamloops that reside in Hi-Hium lake. Something to ponder and and try to unravel over the next few weeks. Did I say weeks? Yes as of January 1st we have about 20 weeks until the 2005 Hi-Hium trip is launched. Yes it's a ways away yet but those 4 1/2 months will pass by quickly.
