American Angler's Club

Great Get Away 2007

Can you believe that we have been doing this for about 22 years now as a group? Well folks it's time to begin to put the plan for the new year in action once again. As it stands now it looks like the first trip of the year will take us back to those waters of Twin Lakes on the Colville reservation. We have enjoyed many days fishing and exploring these waters. This year we are looking to be at the Rainbow Beach Resort from May 5th thru May 12th. Remember that May 13th is Mothers Day. We will arrive on a Saturday and leave the following Saturday. In looking through the notes from 2006 the only thing that might have improved the trip was to have each member have a bed of their own. It's not that the sleeping situation was that bad but it could have been improved with a slight increase in cost per member. The cost range last year was about $350 for the full trip members and about $150 for the three day members per man. If we make some adjustments and pick up another cabin for sleeping I feel we can still bring this trip in at about $420 per man for the full week trip. We will aim to secure the same cabin we had last year plus one small cottage as a sleeper unit. I feel that with a cot in the main cabin plus the two beds and a cot in the small cabin with the two beds we will have a total of six beds available. As usual all expenses are inclusive other than license, booze and gear. That's not too bad in consideration of what you get, a full week of fishing, fine dining, transportation and sharing time with some good friends.

We do hope the spring weather is a bit kinder this year to the resort so that they can have the docks in their proper placements. Last year was quite interesting with the lake levels being so high. The channel between North and South Twin lake was more like a lake itself rather than a passageway. Remember the floating cattail islands just in front of the cabin? that was quite a sight! The fishing was a bit on the tough side but we did manage to find success after we got dialed in on the water level. One thing we did not spend much time on was trying to stir up some bass in the shallows. We got a bit pre-occupied with the brookies and rainbows. This year we might have to spend some time tossing the feathers and fur to those large mouth's for a nice bass feed. We might have to try to get a few more fishermen hooked on the chironomid routine also, it was a gas! We also were a bit surprised how many brookies we were catching. These are normally in the minority of our catch.

So now is the time to plan for this year's trip. Be sure to make time to join your fishing buds for a week of fun and who knows what. We will do another field trip I'm sure as the Bonaparte lake expedition and breakfast was such a success in 2006. In the time leading up to the trip we will have the sportsman shows and the fly fishing show to keep us all worked up for this year's trip. I have the new links to the show web sites for 2007 on the Calendar page of this site and I have added some new reading to the New Horizons page for your winter pleasure.
